KAYAKING AMIDST ICEBERGS

One of our favorite and exhilarating ways to explore Antarctica is by kayaking through its icy waters. Paddle among towering icebergs, bergy bits, past curious penguins, and alongside majestic glaciers is extraordinary. With a little luck, you may have an epic whale encounter!

Most of our expedition cruises offer guided kayaking excursions, allowing you to experience the pristine beauty of Antarctica up close. Drysuits and PFDs are provided as well as some basic instruction. Your kayaking group will have a support Zodiac following.

Most ships will have tandem kayaks but some have single kayak as well.

Single Excursion Kayak Paddle – Typically a single excursion from 1 to 2 hours on an inflatable kayak that is very sturdy and stable. This is a great option for those that want to try an active sport and get closer to the wildlife, water, and ice of Antarctica. The inflatable kayaks used in Antarctica are easily navigable and great for beginners to expert kayakers.

Sea Kayaking Programs - Using proper sea kayaks, with cockpits, these offerings generally allows for multiple excursions of kayaking during the expedition cruise. Experience in sea kayaking is preferred for this activity. The programs are best for those that want to really focus on kayaking at each available opportunity. This means that you forgo a landing but the trade off is worth it. If you enjoy kayaking, we highly recommend this activity.

SKIING ON THE 7TH CONTINENT

Yes! Skiing in Antarctica is possible! And you don't need to be an expert! Strap on your skis and glide across Antarctica's vast snowfields, following in the tracks of explorers past. Skiing offers a unique way to explore the continent's pristine wilderness while getting an excellent workout. Anyone of an intermediate level or higher skier should consider going to Antarctica to ski. Back-country ski experience is not required.

Back Country Adventure

There is only one operator that conducts dedicated back-country skiing in Antarctica one or two departures a year in early November to end of November when the snow is at its best. This requires a highly experienced team with skilled skiing guides and proper insurance to run this operation. Skiers will walk with ski skins to the summit /apex of the hill/mountain that will be skied and then ski back down to sea level. Skiing is the focus of the expedition to Antarctica but there's always time for penguins, whales, and historical sites to visit.

Note: every skier who is interested in the expedition will be interviewed by the operator of the charter to assess qualifications as they well remain available for any of your questions.
